While many of these tour operators and lodges offer sustainable holidays, with environmentally-friendly lodges that employ locals and avidly support community and wildlife development, few are can really say that they are entirely owned and operated by a local community. Il Ngwesi has won several international awards recognizing its success in community-based tourism and natural resource management of the community lands. Ochen offers a last word of advice for their pastoralist tribesmen in Tanzania, “Il Ngwesi lodge is our second cow, Ventolin over the counter, we can always milk it and most importantly there is no drought that can kill it.”
